Rare sights of winter

Right after new year winter came to Northern Germany. Or I might rather say that a hint of winter arrived, as the regular winter in this area feels like a long, wet and greyish autumn from end of October until sometime in March where the only change to recognize is the length of daylight. With mostly western winds and weather coming from the North Atlantic temperatures around zero degree Celsius and a humidity of 90% and above are quite common. Rare are the moments it snows and even less often the snow then stays on the ground and on the trees.

Horizontal Snowing

One of this rare moments appeared just after the new year had started. It wasn’t much of snow and for sure nothing to brag about when talking to people in Scandinavia or Northern America.

Now the thing is that we never know for how long the snow is going to stay (it could be hours up to a couple of days, when we are lucky) and if it might be already the last time it snows during the winter season. That’s why pretty much every family seems to get their sled out of the basement and heads for the next hill (that is what comes closes to mountains in Northern Germany). Only a thin snow cover? Nobody cares.

And also as a photographer there is no excuse to stay home. So we went out on a walk and enjoyed our little winter wonderland.

The next night a warm front with lots of rain passed through and all snow was gone. Hopefully it comes back ones again before spring starts.
